About the Department:

The Department of Geography at Kabi Sukanta Mahavidyalaya is dedicated to fostering a passion for understanding the world in our students. We always tried to offer a nurturing environment for students to develop specialist knowledge across physical and human geography.

Our faculty members are highly qualified, experienced, and actively engaged in academic and quality research activity. They have published widely in quality journals, books and presented papers at national, international conferences. They are also interested in joining workshop, faculty development programme to upgrade themselves. Their expertise spans diverse domains such as geomorphology, climatology, biogeography, regional planning, geospatial technology and more.

The department has excellent infrastructure to facilitate dynamic teaching-learning. Our classroom is equipped with various types of maps, data books, modern survey equipment, and other apparatus. We have a well-established seminar library for our students. We utilize multimedia resources, GIS mapping software, online data portals, and e-journals to stimulate interest. Field visits, survey projects, quiz contests, assignments, and mentoring further enrich learning.

Students are always encouraged to develop creativity, teamwork, communication, analytical, and problem-solving abilities. The ultimate goal of our department is for students to become responsible citizens - skilled in applying geographical concepts to understand real-world challenges and contribute solutions.

Many of our graduates pursue higher studies and build careers in planning, environment, remote sensing, GIS, academics and more. The department takes pride in their achievements. We maintain strong bonds with alumni through networking platforms. Their success stories motivate our current cohort.

With promising growth each year and an ambitious vision, the Department of Geography looks forward to scaling new heights of excellence. We welcome aspiring geographers to join this rewarding journey of geography education at KSMV!

  9. Cordial student-teacher relationship and mentoring support
  1. Overdependence on traditional classroom teaching methods
  2. Limited opportunities for funded research and consultancy services
  3. Alumni network is still in the building phase
  4. Few collaborations with external organizations for events
  1. Exploring online and blended learning alongside classroom teaching
  2. Providing various add-on courses, modern technology training for skill development
  3. Organizing more seminar, webinars, and workshop by inviting eminent geographers from other institutes and other industry professionals.
  4. Collaboration possibilities for faculty exchange programs under MoUs and linkages.
  5. Increased access to e-journals, socio-economic data, geospatial data through UGC programs

  7. Introducing certificate courses to build capability for government exam preparations
  1. Declining student interest and enrollment in humanities disciplines
  2. Rapidly evolving technologies demanding constant upgradation

The Department of Geography has inherent strengths in terms of qualified faculty, interactive teaching methods and strong course foundation. There is appreciable student interest too. However, expansion plans are restricted due to dependence on limited government funding. Collaborations can open up opportunities to access resources, conduct impactful research and support students. Proactive measures must counter enrollment and interest decline threats across social sciences.

Future Plans:

The Department of Geography has charted an ambitious growth plan to usher in the next phase of academic excellence. Core priorities include the introduction of market friendly discipline specific courses in Geography to enable comprehensive learning. Significant upgrades have been outlined for infrastructure and facilities of our geography lab with modern surveying equipment and analytical software and technology. For enriched learning experience, virtual components like MOOCs, e-content and smart classrooms will supplement existing teaching methods.

Strategic roadmaps have been laid out to augment opportunities for students through collaborations, field explorations, internships and guidance for competitive exams. The faculty members will receive impetus to carry out quality research and publish profusely. Moreover, impactful community studies can be undertaken by associating with external partners including NGOs, think tanks and local governance bodies. Conference participation and talks by noted geographers are in the pipeline for more exposure.

Steps will be taken to leverage rich alumni resources to facilitate student mentoring, internships and job placements. The Department also envisions certificate courses, entrepreneurship avenues, skill workshops on cutting-edge geospatial technologies and other job oriented courses to boost employability prospects. Our plans reflect the vision to emerge as a self-reliant Center of Excellence. Prudent execution in a phase-wise manner will help the Department of Geography accomplish the larger goals within a reasonable timeframe.

Best Practices

1. Interactive Teaching Methods

  1. We encourage active student participation through discussions, debates and field visit to enhance understanding and retention of geographical concepts.

2. Field-Based Learning

  1. Regularly conduct field surveys, excursions, and study tours to help students gain hands-on experience and practical insights into geographical phenomena. One can go through our departmental gallery for a quick view.

3. Use of Modern Technology

  1. We always try integrating GIS and remote sensing tools, multimedia resources, and authenticate online data in teaching to keep up with technological advancements in the field.

4. Continuous Evaluation and Feedback

  1. Our continuous internal assessment system, quizzes, assignments and presentations providing students support to their learning progress.

5. Mentorship and Counselling

  1. We have mentorship program where faculty members guide students in academics, career planning, and personal development to nurture their skills and aspirations.

6. Seminars and Workshops and Add-on Courses

  1. We organize regular seminars, student’s seminar, workshops, and guest lectures under academic linkages (MoU) involving experts to provide students with exposure to emerging trends and issues in geography. We also have two add-on courses currently running from our department on population studies and travel tourism management.

7. Maintaining Departmental Records and Documentation

  1. Keep detailed documentation of all departmental activities, seminars and student achievements, to track progress and plan future initiatives effectively.
