About the Department:
The motto of the Department of English of Kabi Sukanta Mahavidyalaya is to “follow knowledge like a sinking star”. The Department aims to inculcate in its students an understanding and passion for English Literature. As per the Choice Based Credit System (CBCS) and the recently introduced New Education Policy (NEP), we, at this Department, are committed to cultivate among our students a fundamental Communication Skill (since a considerable section of them have been learners of English as second language), as well as interest in literature written in and translated into English. The study of English literature at the Undergraduate level is no longer limited within the study of British and American literature. It has expanded to incorporate Commonwealth literature, Indian literature (in English and in English translation), Western and Indian Classical literature and literary theories.
As part of CBCS and NEP curricula, we are also training our students in Ability Enhancement Course (English Communication), and Skill Enhancement Courses like Translation Studies. Along with the regular classes we have dedicated Mentoring classes for understanding the difficulties of our students and assisting them to do better in the examinations.
We have a Departmental Library and a smart classroom for the students for better grasp of the subject through PPT, movies and demonstrations.Students are trained to submit projects through both offline and online mode. Departmental Wall Magazine is published regularly by the Department; students are the prime enthusiasts. Keeping the requirement of the students beyond our Department we have been organizing Value Added Certificate Courses for making our students ready for the future job market.
Our faculty members are highly qualified, experienced, and actively engaged in academic and research work. Apart from the regular activity of taking classes, and performing University assignments, our faculty members have been engaged in responsibilities like Counseling students of IGNOU study centre of our college at UG and PG levels, NSS P.O, Assistant Coordinator of IGNOU study centre, developer of study material of NSOU and Co-Superviser of Ph.D at the University of Raiganj. They have published widely in quality journals, books and presented papers at national, international conferences. They are also interested in joining workshop, faculty development programme to upgrade themselves.
We encourage students for higher studies and try to track their progression through social media platforms meant for the alumni.

Extension Activities
Events And Celebrations
“Variety is the Spice of Life”
Our Department tends to emphasize on a simultaneous engagement in other sort of activities and events that aids in the possible extraction of individual talents (like Debates and Extempore), also providing them a scope to get acquainted with nature (Excursions). We also provide opportunity for students to enrich their knowledge in a wider sense through events like Seminars and Invited Lectures.
Best Practices
Our Department does not limit the students to teaching-learning process only, but also encourages them to think outside the syllabus and get connected to Nature and Society. This is well reflected in our current “Departmental Wall Magazine” that is loosely based on the recent R.G.Kar incident. Not restricting the students only to literary texts related to “women empowerment”, we provided them a scope to think deeply and differently about such kind of social upheaval thereby trying to establish a link between the Text and the Society that has been projected through their creativities like ‘critical writing’, ‘painting’ and ‘poetry’.
